Homeland Security Will Be Enforcing May 7 REAL ID Deadline

The Department of Homeland Security is enforcing the May 7 deadline for REAL ID, which was passed by Congress in 2005 to enhance security standards for identification.

Passports are still acceptable for domestic and international air travel, and non-REAL ID compliant licenses are valid for driving and other purposes outside federal requirements.

TSA has been engaging with states, airlines, and the public to encourage compliance leading up to the May 7 deadline for REAL ID enforcement.

About 81% of travelers at TSA checkpoints nationwide present an acceptable identification, but 30 states were less than 70% compliant with new ID requirements as of mid-April.

TSA will begin full enforcement of the REAL ID Act on May 7, 2025, requiring specific documentation such as full legal name, date of birth, social security number, proof of address, and lawful status for a REAL ID.
