Dollar General Shutting Down Locations Across America At Alarming Rate

Dollar General has closed 27 locations and opened nine in January 2025, a significant shift from the previous year.
CEO Todd Vasos attributes the slowdown to higher new-store occupancy and operating costs. Despite the recent closures, Dollar General plans to open 575 new stores in the U.S. and up to 15 in Mexico, complete 2,000 full remodels, and relocate 45 stores.
There are still 20,401 Dollar General stores in the United States as of February 15, 2025, with six states having more than 1,000 locations each: Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, and Ohio.
